A massive earthquake hit Sichuan province on May 12th, 2008. Chengdu Institute of Biological Products, located in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, was influenced by this massive earthquake too. The production lines and construction site had to be shut down for 2 weeks temporarily.
After the earthquake, Chengdu Institute inspected the facility and evaluated the influence and loss caused by the quake with external technical teams as well as representatives from local and state regulatory authorities.
The inspection showed that the building structure of the JE vaccine facility is intact and undamaged, the clean production systems and utilities in the current JE vaccine facility are in good condition and all equipment works well.
The specialist teams also inspected the new facility under construction to increase JE vaccine manufacturing capacity. The new facility was not harmed by the earthquake. After approval by authority, the construction has resumed.
Because all stored products including bulk and final product are intact and in good storage conditions, Chengdu Institute of Biological Product has finished all orders and supplied more than 5 million vials of JE vaccine to the international market after the earthquake.
However, due to unplanned suspension of production caused by earthquake, some products in process and cultivation were lost. This resulted in some financial loss to a certain extent. |
